Stored Grain Pest

About 500 species of insects have been associated with stored grain products. Nearly 100 species of insect pests of stored products cause economic losses Storage insect pests are categorized into two types viz.

Stored Grain Pest

Primary Pest

Those that infest intact commodities. Primary pests attack and breed in previously undameged commodities. They do not attack milled or ground foodstuff. They are more destructive than secondary pests.

Secondary Pest

Which feeds on processed grain/require the commodity to be damaged before they can infest it.They attack only materials that have been previously damaged either by primary pests or by poor handling and storage. They also attack processed items like flour or milled rice.
