Nematology

Branch of science deals with diverse group of round worms that live in a wide range of environments including soil and fresh and salt.
Nematodes that parasitize plants and are called Plant-parasitic nematodes.
  • Nematodes are thread-like roundworms that live in a wide range of environments including soil and fresh and salt water.
  • The life cycle of a nematode includes eggs, juveniles and adults, and they can overwinter at any of these stages.
  • Most Plant parasitic nematodes feed by piercing and killing root cells with needle-like structures called stylets.
  • Common symptoms caused by nematodes includes lesion, galls, cyst formation, yellowing, stunting, wilting.

Lab work

  • Lab testing starts with collection of infested/suspected sample followed by extraction of nematodes by various method (Barman’s funnel method, cobb’s sieves technique) and preparation of slide mounts for microscopic observation of nematodes.
