WEED: plant growing out of place, growing where it is not wanted is defined as weed.
  • In order to control and manage weeds we need to correctly identify the weed intercepted with seeds/grains/pulses.

Lab work

  • It starts with collection, segregation, and preservation of weed seeds for identification.
  • Slide mounts are prepared for identification of minute seeds.
  • Visual examination of sample of seeds/grains/pulses will be carried out using illuminated magnifier or Magnoscope. (10X magnification)
  • Sieving technique is used for identification any weed seeds of different size.
  • Gravity Separation method is used to collect the minute weed seeds or lighter weed seeds.
  • Microscopic observation is carried out for morphological characterizastion viz., seed appendages, seed-coat ornamentation under steriobinocular microscope/compound binocular.
